PIANO LESSONS

It's never too early or too late to start learning piano!

Many children are ready between the ages of 6 and 9. By then, their brains are easily adapted to new skills and information. Playing piano instills confidence, teaches time management and instills a better work ethic. Learning as a child is ideal because they will carry the benefits into adulthood.

But our brains don’t retire when we grow up. Adults can learn too and they have the ability to concentrate longer and expand more mental effort. Adults’ neuroplasticity can see significant improvements, meaning that the brain changes through growth and reorganization; it is rewired to function a new way. My students are made up of both children AND adults…almost two thirds of my students are adults!

Music Theory

To play the piano fluently, one needs to know the language. For this reason, students are introduced to the theory of music right from the start in tandem with their practical learning. In addition, I offer private theory instruction which can be for one's own edification, or geared towards a formal examination.

Tracks and Recording

My music tracks have been used by individuals, choral groups, and schools. They have been broadcast, incorporated into teaching plans, and featured in concerts. With my computer music set-up, I am able to create fully realized, multi-instrumental digital works that can be utilized for vocal rehearsal tracks, karaoke backgrounds, or original compositions. Live mic overlays on-site are no problem!

Guitar Circle

“Guitar Circle” is a gathering of good-natured folks dedicated to learning the acoustic guitar. Unlike other music groups, membership is by invitation only. To be considered, individuals may ask to audition by attending a meeting. Some music reading is required and regular participation is a must!

What are
Coffee Notes?

Tasting notes are the unique natural flavour elements in a coffee bean.

Music and coffee go together because...

Both music and coffee are two ways to get energized, whether it’s a morning boost or an afternoon pick-me-up. Both caffeine and music access the pleasure and reward centres in our brains.

About Me

I am a native Calgarian, born and raised. My music studies began at an early age and I knew almost right away that I wanted to pursue this vocation professionally.

After high school, I enrolled at the University of Calgary, where I received my Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education degrees in 1986 and 1988 respectively. I continued my studies, receiving a Master of Music degree from the University of Alberta in 1992. Piano studies ran concurrently with my University education and I earned an A.R.C.T. (Associateship) from the Royal Conservatory of Music as a piano teacher in 1991.

In 2016, I applied for, and was granted membership to the “Alberta Registered Music Teachers’ Association” (ARMTA) where I remain a member in good standing.

Yours truly playing Elton John's piano at the "National Music Centre" - apparently he said it was okay.

I am fortunate that I have worked in music professionally for over 40 years. Within that time, I have been a piano teacher, piano accompanist, college instructor, choir director, and composer. I have also enjoyed learning the guitar, clarinet, and becoming adept with various types of music software.

Schedule a Complimentary Meeting

Before any lessons begin, it is important for the students, parents, and teacher to be introduced to each other. For that reason, I arrange a friendly meet-and-greet for everyone involved. This informal get-together takes the uncertainty away if and when that first lesson does arrive. It is an opportunity for the parents and/or students to express their music goals and to ask any questions they may have pertaining to fees, scheduling, or policies of the studio.
